Workshops, Call for Proposals (Deadline July 1, 2005)
Posters, Call for Posters (Deadline September 1, 2005)

The EPIC is a new conference at the juncture between ethnographic praxis and corporate research. EPIC presentations span a broad range of work from critical theory and application papers, to interactive demonstrations, videos, installations, posters and workshops. Beyond this, the conference aspires to promote the integration of anthropological perspectives, methods and theory into business practices; to advocate business decisions based upon sound research; to promote public recognition of practicing ethnography as a profession; and to support the continuing professionalization of the field. This announcement is for an early call for papers and workshop proposals within the scope of Sociality.

Papers, Abstracts Submission Deadline June 17, 2005
We are seeking three types of papers:

(1) Theoretically-oriented papers: Papers (15 pages single-spaced / 40 minute presentations) that address issues of theory that relate to a better understanding of ethnographic praxis associated with sociality;

(2) Methods papers: Papers (10 pages single-spaced / 20 minute presentations) that discuss methods and practice in ethnographic work that help highlight the importance of sociality;

(3) Cutting-edge research & practices papers: Papers (5 pages single-spaced / 15 minute presentations) that highlight innovative techniques, for example around representations of data or communicating data out; work in progress; or other creative thinking that might be fruitful to share with fellow practitioners. Should not be methods focused.

EPIC Poster Guidelines
    The Posters section provides an opportunity to present work in a forum that facilitates open discussion and enables authors to interact directly with conference attendees. In the Posters section, we encourage the submission of late-breaking, preliminary or exploratory work, and any other research that authors wish to present in an interactive, open forum. We encourage creativity in representing ethnographic projects, findings, methods and points-of-view in a visual medium. We look forward to your submissions.

    General Information:
    • Keep in mind that a poster is a visual medium. It is best to rely on images and figures to tell your story rather than words alone.
    • Most people read from left to right and top to bottom-make sure the sequence of your poster is easy to follow.
    • Sans serif fonts such as Arial, Verdana, and Trebuchet are easily readable, as are some serif fonts such as Times. While you are not limited to these fonts, keep legibility in mind.
    • A powerful poster emphasizes one key issue. Think about the point you want to communicate. Are you sharing a unique methodology? An unusual topic? Unexpected findings? Find your message and make it clear to your audience.
    • While you will have a chance to stand with your poster and talk with other attendees for a couple of hours, it will be on display throughout the conference. Your poster should “speak” for itself to those you do not have a chance to talk to you.

    Mechanics:
    • Posters should be aligned horizontally, 3' x 4' (approximately 91 cm x 121 cm, posters printed on A0 paper will also be allowed).
    • Posters will be tacked to a wall during the conference. We recommend that you have your poster printed onto a single 3' x 4' sheet. However, if this is not possible, we can make arrangements for you to mount your components on a single sheet once on site.
    • Title should be centered at the top of the poster in 48-60 point font.
    • Authors names should be centered below the title in 36-48 point font.
    • Text font should be readable from at least a few feet away, no smaller than 18 point, larger is recommended (24 point or more is better).
    • The total amount of text on a poster should be no more than the equivalent of 4-5 double spaced pages in 18-20 point font.
    • All illustrations should have explanatory captions.
    • Posters should have a 1-2" (2-5 cm) border around the edge (white or decorated).
